BACKGROUND
A global presence requires scalable translation processes
Ottobock is a leading global manufacturer of medical orthopaedic technology, whose innovative products are subject to strict regulatory requirements. The linguistic focus is on high precision: reliable translations are required along the entire value chain, from development to production to distribution. The language services department is faced with the challenge of maintaining high quality standards across 4 million words of translations per year in over 35 languages.
AIM
Faster translation management
Ottobock wanted to modernise its translation processes to meet the growing demands of increasing translation volumes. The key needs were consistent integration of existing terminology, compliance with data protection requirements and a significant reduction in the delivery times for translations without the risk of a loss in quality.
SOLUTION
AI translation with secure hosting in Switzerland
In 2022, Supertext developed specialised AI translation models for Ottobock’s main languages, German and English, supplemented by generic models for additional language combinations. AI translation was initially introduced in the language services department and then rolled out across the entire company. The system takes into account specific technical terminology in all languages and allows all employees to access consistent translation output through an intuitive interface.
Consistent data security is guaranteed by secure hosting in Switzerland via the Supertext cloud. In addition, the principle of privacy by design is applied to data processing during the planning, design and development of software and hardware. In practice, this means that no data is stored during the translation process.
“Order delivery time could be reduced by two thirds using AI translation – more evidence that AI provides faster translation while maintaining the same quality.”
