What are your tasks at Supertext?

Anything that has to do with language in any form. We verify AI translations and review freelancer work, but also develop workflows for clients with specific requirements, whether that involves quality checks, developing style guides or setting up and maintaining linguistic teams.

What makes a good language specialist?

In addition to a passion for languages, the most important thing is an interest in what technology has to offer. Tech helps us keep our skills sharp and ready for anything that our clients might request. We also need a keen eye for detail and the drive to get every project, no matter how tightly scheduled, across the finish line.

And how exactly do you ensure maximum language quality?

Firstly, by only working with people who have a degree in language or many years of experience. And secondly, by not leaving anything to chance and working tirelessly to ensure that every word is in the right place. This can sometimes be tricky, but it is always worth it.

What exactly does a research scientist do?

In short: I turn client requirements into reality by improving existing translation models and developing specialised models that we can tailor to the corporate wording of our clients through training. We also develop new features based on the latest research findings.

How does specialised training like this work – and what does it require?

We develop the model and adapt it to the company’s individual language and style. For training, we require raw material – usually internal translation data from clients – and broad knowledge of computational linguistics and coding. From the initial green light to the delivery, it takes about five weeks. In between, we carry out extensive testing and comparison with quality standards.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

We are currently turning the way translation systems are trained on its head using large language models (LLM). This is a very exciting development that allows for customer-specific adaptation of translations in real time and also raises general translation quality to a new level – in three out of four language pairs, we even perform better than industry giant DeepL.
